About the Event
Are you passionate about making your community a better place to live, but tired of the incremental, risk-averse, cap-in-hand, just-in-time 'solutions' we currently apply to investing in social impact? Whether you work in government, the community sector, business, or social business, you’ll find your thinking challenged, along with a feast of new approaches, ideas and mindsets to apply to your purpose-driven, mission-driven or policy-driven work.
Come join the Institute for Community Prosperity as we welcome author (The Beautiful Bailout, and An Army of Problem Solvers), Ashoka Fellow, and serial social entrepreneur Shaun Loney for a provocative and stimulating evening of rethinking how we tackle social change. Co-presented with ConnectFirst Credit Union, Encompass Co-op, Alberta SEED, Alberta Social Innovation Connect, Canada West Foundation, and the Mount Royal University Faculty of Continuing Education, this event will bring changemakers together and inspire local change as we learn to:
- Shift the grants economy to an outcomes economy
- Rethink social impact through outcomes-based purchasing
- Unleash new capital through social procurement
- Bring an innovation mindset to nonprofit work

Short Film Screening - Broke: The Business of System Change
This wry comedy short reveals just how broken the system is of how we value, fund and measure social impact, and how we can reimagine the role of government in addressing solutions to social challenges, while nudging nonprofits toward valuing and selling their outcomes.
Talk: From Small Change to Big Change
If you want small change, do things differently, but if you want big change, you must see things differently. Loney will talk about how, when it comes to social impact, we undervalue what we fund, yet we value what we pay for. How do we shift our mindsets and practices accordingly?
Fireside Chat
A chance for the audience to engage in dialogue with Loney.
Moderated by Dr. Katharine McGowan, historian and Assistant Professor, Social Innovation, Bissett School of Business, Mount Royal University.
Mix and Mingle
Join us for a beverage afterward. We’ve been apart an awful long time. What better reason to come together than to learn how we work together in new ways.
Mingle At a Distance
For those of us who are still not ready to meet in person, or who are a little farther from Calgary. Join our mingle conversation online after the Fireside Chat.
