What is AB Seed?

The first question you might have is, what does AB Seed stand for? It stands for Alberta Social Economy Ecosystem Development. Okay great, now what does THAT mean?

First, let's explain the social economy.

In short, the social economy consists of social enterprise and social finance organizations working towards increasing the scale of our impact and improving social outcomes for all Albertans.

Examples of organizations that fit into the social economy are

  • non-profits

  • charities

  • co-operatives

  • social enterprises

  • and social finance, amongst others.

So what does AB Seed do then?

We are building the social economy ecosystem in Alberta by enhancing collaboration, communication, and strategization of leaders and contributors working in the social economy.

Our vision for Alberta’s future is to be the best place to build and grow the social economy. We exist to increase the scale of these communities' impact and improve social outcomes for all Albertans.

So HOW do you do that?

Well, we...

Connect

Connect with Social Enterprises and Entrepreneurs, Support Organizations, Governing Bodies, Professional Services, Social Finance Organizations, and all other members of the ecosystem with each other to ensure resources and supports are getting to where they are needed (General connections and relationship building). For an example of how we do this check out our community groups or ecosystem directory.

Share

Collect and distribute Information, resources, stories, learnings, gaps, and data with members of the ecosystem to support a strong foundation, and improve learning and education (Newsletter, Website, mailing lists, events). For an example of how we do this check out our community groups or ecosystem directory.

Collaborate

Bring like minded people and organizations together to foster collaboration and cooperation through facilitated and informal groups (communities of practice, online community, learning communities, steering committee). For an example of how we do this check out our resource map.

Promote

Opportunities, events, and other ecosystem building resources to encourage full engagement (IRP, Social Finance Fund, Bootcamps). For an example of how we do this check out our blog.

Engage

Actively seek out and engage known and yet to be known areas of the social economy ecosystem with an aim to be fully inclusive, and reduce language and jargon barriers (Indigenous, BIPOC, Rural). For an example of how we do this check out our community groups or ecosystem directory.

Build

Actively seek to understand the broader ecosystem and work within to identify and direct services towards gaps and needs.  (Relationship building, collaboration). For an example of how we do this check out our resource map.
